The New Mexico Alcohol Alliance (NMAA) is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization created in 2020 to unite liquor license owners to mobilize under a strong and unified voice. Our objective was – and still is – to protect licenses from potential legislation that could threaten the substantial financial investments of licensees.
Eight bills that would have negatively affected licensees were introduced in the New Mexico Legislature in 2020. None passed, but all indicated that legislators intended to make sweeping changes to the Liquor Control Act.
Those changes were addressed in the 2021 Session when liquor control and cannabis bills dominated committee hearings and floor sessions. NMAA members and the lobbying team worked diligently to educate lawmakers about the harm posed by many of the bills. While most were defeated, one bill, enormous in size and harmful to many, made it the governor’s office and was signed into law.
Our work is not finished! Legislators have demonstrated interest in continuing to revise the Liquor Control Act.
Whether you own a single license or manage the rights for multiple entities, you cannot afford to go it alone. Now is the time to collaborate. Membership dues go toward lobbying and educating lawmakers.
